The Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian
A Brief Biography
Tim Vivian received M.A.s in English and Comparative Literature, an M.A. in American Literature at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D (Classics, History, Religious Studies) at UC Santa Barbara in 1985. Sponsored by the Diocese of Los Angeles, he received his M.Div. from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (Episcopal) in Berkeley in 1988, then went to Yale Divinity School as a Henry R. Luce Post-Doctoral Fellow from 1988-1990. He is currently an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at CSU Bakersfield. Tim was ordained deacon in June 1988 by the Rt. Rev. Frederick Borsch, Bishop of Los Angeles, and priest in December 1988 by the late Rt. Rev. Ted Jones, Bishop of Northern Indiana and served parishes in Santa Barbara and Connecticut before returning to California in 1990. He was one of the founding members of Remain Episcopal Bakersfield and was appointed Interim Vicar of Grace Episcopal Church by the Rt. Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori in December, 2007 and, later, installed as Vicar by The Rt. Rev. Jerry Lamb.
Tim is married to Miriam Raub Vivian, a History professor at CSU Bakersfield. They have three children: Meredith, 23, a graduate student in Public Policy at USC who also works in the Orange County field office of State Senator Lou Correa; John, 19, a senior at UC Santa Cruz in Bimolecular Engineering who works in the school's IT department; and David, 18, a freshman at UC Santa Cruz and a goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team.
