The Rev. Dr. Vernon Hill
A Brief Biography
I was born January 22, 1944, in San Diego, California. My dad taught high school and my mother became a “Buyer” for the City of San Diego. Melinda and I have lived in Wofford Heights on Lake Isabella (50 miles northeast of Bakersfield in the Kern River Valley) for the past 18 years.
Most of my public education was in San Diego schools including graduation from San Diego State in 1965 with an A.B. in history. I followed with my graduate work at the School of Theology, Claremont, California resulting in a Rel.D. (AKA D.Min) in liturgy and the arts in 1969. During that I time also served as organist-choirmaster at Holy Trinity Parish, Alhambra, beginning my Episcopal Church story.
Ordained as a minister in the United Methodist Church, I served churches in Escalon, Sunnyvale and Bakersfield, California. I also was involved in summer camp youth ministries. In 1987 I retired from the Methodist Church after 20 years and worked 3 years for Tandy Corporation/Radio Shack just as the personal computer was being debuted. Not only did I enter on the ground floor of the computer revolution, but I learned a great deal about business and sales. I became manager of a computer center. While with Radio Shack I also began the completion of my “education credentials” and, on leaving Tandy, entered the world of public education, teaching 8th grade history (along with a little science, math, computer science, and English). I retired in 2006 after 20 years teaching. For a portion of that time I also served on the Adjunct Faculty for Cerro Coso Community College as an instructor in Philosophy.
Melinda and I attended the Episcopal Church during most of the last 18 years (I, as a church organist), and in 2009 I was ordained an Episcopal priest by The Rt. Rev. Jerry Lamb, Bishop for the Diocese of San Joaquin. I presently serve part-time as Associate Vicar of Grace.
Melinda and I travel for at least 3-4 months every summer with our 5th wheel exploring favorite spots in the West, taking photos and fishing. At home I do museum-quality model railroading (an interest that began at about 2 years of age for which I have photographic evidence).
We have four grown children – Lissy, Brian, Kristin and Kelly and six grandchildren.
